The roots of the Hungry Moose Market and Deli lie in locally gown produce and organic and natural foods. This was before the word, “organic” was a household word. In the summer of 1994, less than one year after moving to Big Sky, Mark and Jackie held a weekly “Big Sky Farmer’s Market”. Jackie and her infant son drove over an hour to two local growers and picked up the fresh vegetables and flowers they grew plus fruit brought in from neighboring states. Mark stayed behind to set up the tarp, stand, hanging scale and the “Farmer’s Market Today” sandwich board. Word spread and most of what Jackie brought back sold out within a couple of hours.
As fall approached and the weather turned, the local customers asked the Robins to figure out a way to keep this fresh produce market alive. A couple of months later, this became the original Hungry Moose Market, a small grocery store specializing in produce, natural foods and quickly other items requested by the growing customer base. In 1998, the Robins expanded to double the size of the store adding a small deli in the corner and changing the name to The Hungry Moose Market and Deli.
In 2004, the couple, broke ground on a new building in the Town Center of Big Sky, nearly tripling the size of the store. The new deli included an espresso bar and a greatly expanded menu of hot and cold sandwiches plus house-made soups, salads and desserts. The outdoor patio seating and location in the heart of the growing Town Center retail area adjacent to most of the residential neighborhoods in the area made this new location an instant hit with locals and visitors alike.
Delivering groceries had always been a part of the business but with a greatly enhanced inventory of items, this side of the business also increased. An easy to use online ordering system and longstanding relationships with all of the area resorts and property managers meant that the Moose could deliver groceries efficiently delighting those who took advantage of the service with a full fridge upon arrival.
In 2013, the opportunity to expand to the Mountain Mall at the base of Big Sky Resort presented itself and the Robins did not hesitate. A complete renovation of the space adding a full kitchen and similar deli menu to the Town Center store meant that the Hungry Moose was now “On the Mountain”. Skiers in that first winter enjoyed a daily hot bar, a soup and chili bar, Nathan’s hot dogs plus all of the favorite Hungry Moose sandwiches, salads, smoothies and more. Visitors to the area and mountain locals also enjoyed a much larger inventory of fresh foods and groceries.
The Hungry Moose Market and Deli celebrated their first twenty years in business with an all out community party on June 29th at The Town Center Stage. Festivities included two bands, plenty of food and drink for all, face painting and cotton candy, Anniversary gifts like frisbees, beach balls, hats and t-shirts. An estimated crowd of 1,200 turned out to enjoy the fun and to congratulate the family on twenty years of business in the Big Sky community.
